Why More Office Space Is Key to a Winning Team

A recent study by the British Council for Offices has recommended that office workers are given up to 12 metres of space each. A rise from 2018 when each person had only 9 square metres on average.

The report is aimed at landlords and developers to “achieve the optimal level of density”. And it seems well-timed.

Since the pandemic, the trend for flexible working and the option of working from home (WFH), workers are citing “health concerns” and the need for better working environments to entice them back into a shared environment.

Separate dining areas, meeting spaces, breakout rooms, better ventilation and sustainability have all been recognised as requirements to ensure a happy and productive working space.

The report concludes that the more space each worker has is “where most workplace issues and concerns are alleviated”.

And as the office density in the UK is one of the highest in Europe, business leaders and employers may take heed of the advice as they try and entice a motivated and collaborative workforce back into a shared office.

Italian and Swedish office workers enjoy more than 20 square meters of space and in Finland workers can enjoy the freedom of working in at least 30 square metres of their own space.

But why does this matter?

Because the best teams achieve common and shared goals, quicker.

A happy, highly-motivated team, working in an inspiring environment will reach their own and collective potential and contribute to the sustained growth of a business.

Here at ActionCOACH Cheltenham we work with business professionals to recruit and retain the best team around them. And support them to become great leaders.

How do we do that?

The DiSC behaviour profiling tool is a valuable part of the business coaching process with us. Where we ask our clients and their teams to take a 5 minute online test to discover whether the individual falls into the D for dominance, I for influential, S for steadiness or C for conscientious category.

With this knowledge and learning how to communicate with each other, a business leader can learn valuable lessons, not only about themselves but also about how to get the most of his or her team.

  • Do your team members work at the same pace?
  • Are some focussed on the detail and others on the bigger picture?
  • Do they feel valued and listened to enough?
  • And as a business leader what can you learn from this to get the best out of your team?
